The
CSU Orchestra is an ensemble that enjoys an active performance schedule
while performing a rich diversity of orchestral repertoire under the
baton of a dynamic group of conductors. This ensemble is comprised of
university instrumentalists that represent all of the major families of
musical instruments. The majority of its members are music majors and
participation is by audition.
The CSU Orchestra is entering a new era of
visibility in and outside the community of Columbus with the engagements
of renowned conductors and soloists such as Yoel Levi, Music Director
Emeritus of the Atlanta Symphony; David Lockington, Music Director of
the Grand Rapids Symphony and pianist Jon Kimura Parker, who joins the
Schwob School of Music faculty as the Dr. E. Stephen Purdom
Distinguished Visiting Artist for 2005–2007.
Repertoire for the CSU Orchestra ranges from the
classics of the Baroque and Classical eras to the standard orchestral
repertoire of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Performances in
recent years have included such standards as Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures
at an Exhibition’, the first and second symphonies of Johannes Brahms,
Respighi’s ‘Pines of Rome’, Dvorak’s ‘New World’ Symphony
and a number of Beethoven symphonies.
Collaborative performances with faculty and student
soloists of the Schwob School of Music have provided the students of
this ensemble with another outlet for learning and inspiration. Faculty
soloists have included Patricio Cobos, violin; Andree Martin, flute;
Tracy Xian, piano; Andre Gaskins, cello; Lisa Oberlander, clarinet; Earl
Coleman, violin and Andrew Zohn, guitar. As a venue for student
collaborations, the CSU Orchestra regularly accompanies the winner of
the annual concerto competition.
The CSU
orchestra has been selected on numerous occasions to appear at the
Georgia Music Educators Association and Georgia Music Teachers
Association conventions. In addition to its on-campus performance
schedule, the CSU Orchestra assists in the production of operas,
musicals, and various other interdepartmental productions. Several
members of the CSU Orchestra also perform regularly with the Columbus,
Macon and LaGrange Symphony Orchestras. |
